Why should you upgrade your intake system
An upgraded intake system increases the amount of airflow available to your engine while still properly filtering out debris or particles from the road. In vehicles that have the M177 LS2 with twin turbochargers, higher airflow allows the engine to make more power. This is most apparent in vehicles running higher boost levels such as those that are tuned or have upgraded turbochargers. The stock airboxes, even with high-flow filters, show their limitations, especially with upgraded turbos. Proper airboxes help ensure that the majority of intake air comes from outside the engine bay where the air is cooler. Overly hot air going into your engine can increase the likelihood of knock or detonation. A good intake system must provide enough air to meet power demands, provide cool air and filter out particles and debris from the road.
The Weistec M177 LS2 Air Box
The Weistec M177 LS2 Air Box provides more flow by featuring twin cone filters that have substantially more flow than OEM-sized panel air filters. The filters are enclosed in the airbox to help keep heat from the engine bay away. The airbox is fed via the same air inlets on the radiator core support that the stock airboxes use, pulling fresh air from in front of the radiator. The carbon fiber top panels of the box are removable for servicing the filters. For those that want maximum turbo induction noise, the tops can be left off with minimal impact on performance. The airbox has provisions for bolting on the bypass valves and is compatible with our M177 LS2 VTA Adapters for those that also want the “blow off” noise.
Custom Core Support. Less Air Restriction
The filters feature a 4-ply lightly oiled cotton media filtration element. This filter element is perfect for high airflow applications as it offers minimal airflow restriction while providing enough air filtration to protect your engine in road and track use. The airbox lids consist of a base layer of 0.03" thick 304 stainless steel and a top layer of carbon fiber, giving the intake a sleek and refined look. The core support adapters are made from 80 durometer silicone and attach the airbox directly to core support mounted air intake ducts, providing unrestricted airflow to the airbox. Competitors' airboxes utilize the stock intake core support adapters which have a bellows design which adds a lot of restriction and greatly decreases the benefits of an aftermarket intake. The other options on the market also fail to offer the same fitment and sealing/isolation from engine bay heat that the Weistec M177 LS2 Air Box offers.
228% More Airflow Surface Area
Each turbo of the twin-turbo system is fed by its own intake tube and conical filter. Each conical filter features a 3.5" diameter flange and 87.75 square inches of filter element area for a combined total of 175.5" square inches of filter element area. Compared to the stock intake system, our intake provides a massive 228% of the filter airflow area of the stock filters. Each Weistec intake tube features a 3" OD (approximately 2.75" ID) outlet to each turbo. Compared to the 2.25" ID size of the stock intake tubes, the Weistec system greatly decreases restriction by feeding each turbo with an intake tube that has 1.5x the cross-sectional area of each of the stock tubes.
